Valencia, Madrid

Valencia also had a central market in the city center. It was much smaller than that of Barcelona but much, much cleaner.

We had hoped to try some of the fresh seafood as we had in Barcelona but there were no stalls serving food inside the market. Instead, we headed to one of the stands just outside the market. The paella and arroz negro were again surprisingly salty. I guess that's just the way they do it in Valencia...

Valencia is supposed to be known for its beaches so we went to Playa Cardenal to check it out. Quinn and I sat in some beach chairs under a straw umbrella to get away from the blistering Spanish heat.

Next stop: Madrid
I'd never ridden in a first class train in Europe but we had reservations in a first class car on our 3 hour 40 minute train ride to Madrid. We were served cava, drinks, and snacks, offered reading material and headphones for the movie, and were seated in spacious reclining seats.

We got to Madrid, and my first impression was not a very good one. Right away, I could feel that the city was not particularly safe. When trying to find a place for dinner, each place we looked into was filthy and the floors were covered in trash. We finally settled for eating at Museo del Jamon where it looked slightly cleaner but still had some trash visible on the floor.

Our hotel, Hotel Intur Palacio San Martin, was very centrally located. It was just a 2 minute walk from Plaza Mayor and the neighboring shops, cafes, clubs, and restaurants.
